Chapter 53

We probably could have predicted something bad was going to happen!

1)  While Pip is tied up and listening to the angry Orlick, he has some thoughts that are pretty revealing.  Pip thinks he's going to die....what is it that he wants?

2)  Your comments on this chapter?

Bonus point for anyone who can tell us what a sluice house is.

3 comments:

  1. A sluice is "an artificial channel for conducting water, often fitted with a gate at the upper end for regulating the flow." (Dictionary.com)
A sluice house is named for being near or associated with a sluice.

  2. 2) He's crazy. I mean, I know he's drunk, but he's crazy. I never liked Orlick mostly because if his name and his asshole personality. I had to put the book down, get up and think "Is this happening? Is this really happening? Holy..." It's hard to let his word sink in-you feel just as baffled and surprised as Pip is.

I was just: http://www.reactiongifs.com/r/agtmbomg.gif the entire time.

  3. Just as a comment on the chapter: I found it very effective how this chapter started off with very accurate descriptions of the scene, that created an effective mood for the events to come. One in particular was the description of the area around the sluice. "the mud and ooze were coated with lime, and the choking vapour of the kiln crept in a ghostly way towards me." (Dickens, 426) It foreshadowed the creepiness that Pip was about to experience. Plus the "abandoned and broken sluice" combined with the "dark night" and "red large moon" (426) reminded me of a graveyard. Which once you read the chapter fits well.
