Chapter 18

Ahhh another stranger at the Three Jolly Bargemen!

1) Who is this man?  Where have we seen him before?  (hint....my favorite chapter)

This stranger brings tidings of great fortune and expectation for Pip.

2)  What are the three conditions that Pip must agree to in order to accept his "expectation"?

3)  Why does Pip assume that Miss Havisham is behind his "great expectations"?

This is like a dream come true for Pip -- he is to have a fortune and become a gentleman. It's kind of like hitting the lottery. Can you think of any movies with a similar plot?

  1. 2) There are three conditions that Pip must abide by in order to accept his new role is social class, which is his "expectation." First must bear his name which means he must carry his name to his new location. The second requirement is that Pip must keep all information about his legal and liberal guardians a secret. An example of Mr. Jaggers describing this is when he says, "that name of the person who is your liberal benefactor remains a profound secret." (Dickens, 139) The reason for this is so no one figures out that Pip is from a family of common blacksmith's. It's sad to see that individuals would try to hide their or others actual family information just to be noticed in their social community. Lastly, Pip must agree to be prohibited from blatantly speaking his own opinion, and is asked to keep all suspicions to himself. This is so Pip acts like a proper gentleman and not get out of hand.

    3) Pip assumes Miss Havisham is behind his "great expectations" because Mr. Jagger's was sent to tell him that his dream has come true and he now has a new role is society. Pip quickly comes to the conclusion that Mr. Jaggers was sent by Miss Havisham because he originally met him at her house. An example from text is when Pip indicates, "My dream was out; my wild fancy was surpassed by sober reality; Miss Havisham was going to make my fortune on a grand scale." (Dickens, 139)
