Chapter 44

Pip returns to Satis House for some answers.

Important revelations are made by Pip, Estella and Miss Havisham, and we begin to see a new side of Miss Havisham.

What do you notice?

  1. I'm going to make a prediction and say that Wemmick found out that Provis is planning on hurting Pip or that Provis is planning on doing something horrible that will involve Pip. I think this because to me Provis is not a trustworthy character because of his past with Compeyson. He is a convict and was charged with "putting stolen notes in circulation - and there [were] other charges behind" (Dickens 349). I believe that since he has done these things in his past, he will be tempted to do them or worse again. Pip will probably stay away for a day then be too curious and go home.

    1. Either way Provis probably did something bad or got in trouble with someone.

  2. In this chapter a new side of Miss Havisham is displayed. Before she would delight in nothing more than to see Estella reject Pip and for Pip to continue to go after her. However, in this chapter Pip confronts Miss Havisham and Estella for what they are doing and Miss Havisham begins to feel "pity and remorse" (Dickens, 365) towards Pip. It's almost as if she sees herself in Pip and how he is devoting himself to Estella just as Miss Havisham did to Compeyson years ago. Once again the same outcome is occurring. We also see a new side in Estella as we start to see that she has turned into exactly the type of person that Compeyson was.
