Chapter 48

Dinner with Jaggers, and a walk with Wemmick.  More backstory is revealed.

1) Why do you think Jaggers brings up the idea that Drummle will have to beat Estella if he wants the upper hand in the marriage?

2) Molly is said to have been "tamed" by Jaggers from the moment she goes to work for him. How do you suppose she was "tamed"?

  1. 1) The reason Mr. Jaggers brings this up is because he knows Estella better than Drummle. Back in chapter 29, there is an interesting occurence, in which Jaggers seems to look at Estella. The way in which this situation is described seems to suggest that something more is going on here. This situation shows Mr Jaggers connecting to Estella for the first time, as he seems to realize that Estella is a sociopath. The reason this is so important for Mr. Jaggers is because he too is a sociopath. The way he treats people seems to suggest a lack of empathy, especially the way he ignores potential clients. His behaviour suggests someone who is incabable of connecting with people on an emotional level. When he says that Estella is smart, he knows what he is talking about, as he knows what she feels.
