Chapter 49

Pip is summoned once more to Miss Havisham's. An important chapter.

1) It is the beginning of atonement.  How does that word apply to Miss Havisham....to Pip?

2)  How is Miss Havisham's fiery fate foreshadowed?

3)  Other comments?

  1. 1) After reading this chapter, we start to see a new side of Miss Havisham and we learn that she is “not all stone” (398) and does indeed have a heart inside of her. When Pip visits Miss Havisham she agrees to help Herbert out. After they talk, she realizes how much Pip loves Estella and how she made Pip completely miserable. She feels terrible and exclaims, “What have I done! What have I done!” (400). Miss Havisham finally realizes how horrible she has been to Pip and she wants his forgiveness. This is not only the start of Miss Havisham's atonement, but Pip's as well. Pip says to Miss Havisham that “there have been more mistakes; and [his] life has been a blind and thankless one; and [he] want[s] forgiveness and direction far too much to be bitter with [her]” (400). Pip realizes that he has also done some unforgivable things in his life and he wants to be forgiven, so he will forgive Miss Havisham. Later on in the chapter, Pip also saves Miss Havisham from the fire. This took a lot of courage and it requires Pip to think about someone other than himself. Pip was willing to risk his health to save someone who did something very wrong to him. That act of kindness reminds me of the kindness Joe shows to Pip, even though Pip has completely shut him out.

  2. 3) Pip is a considerate person. He doesn't seem to have as much of a "rich and snobby" air about him anymore. Pip is going out of his way to help everyone. He tries to give Miss Havisham a sense of peace by forgiving her, and later goes to "assure [himself] that Miss Havisham was as safe and well as [he] had left her." (Dickens, 431)
Pip also finds the need to help Abel Magwitch and Herbert.
